Pitfalls in MLM and How to Avoid It

There just isn’t any business with a built-in guarantee for success. The MLM or multi-level marketing, a.k.a. network marketing or relationship marketing business is no different.

Not all who fall in will have the same positive and rewarding experience that you read about in the business opportunity leaflets they hand out. It would be awesome if it was the other way around, but it just isn’t that way. But there are some common pitfalls everyone can avoid in order to have a shot at success in the MLM business.

There are so many MLM companies operating in today’s market, each selling different product lines. Well, not exactly. There are companies that offer the same product lines but offer different profit-sharing schemes. And there are yet companies that offer same products and same compensation strategies.

The point is, you have to do your homework and select the right MLM company to join. Many of those who failed in the business gave no thought to the selection of the right company.

Setting unrealistic target is yet another pitfall to avoid. Just because someone hit $50,000.00 during his first month, which the testimonial literature says, doesn’t mean you’ll be having the same experience.

Granted they aren’t all just exaggeration, but you have to realize that these figures couldn’t be achieved while lounging in your lazy boy and making a few phone calls. It is not even enough that you set a reasonable target, you also have to set a fair amount of time to work on hitting those figures in your target.

There are those that take much liking to the testimonials saying only an hour or two spent each day allowed them to reach such and such income.

If you believe this, you’ve hit another pitfall.

Too often, there are those who quit after only a few months because they aren’t seeing results. And these are people who worked their butts off. You’ve got to realize that as with any business, MLM takes some serious thought and effort.

There is no silver bullet for success in MLM or in any other business for that matter. All kinds of business are with its own risks and returns, disappointments and success. Pitfalls will be there but awareness and taking action allows us to sidestep this blunder and move forward with better chances of succeeding.

To succeed anywhere, you need to keep your wits about you, put up determined effort, and spend time to pursue your goals. This works for MLM, too. If you are willing to pay the price, the MLM business can be a positive, rewarding experience for you.

MLM Is Today’s Hottest Business

Even before the financial crisis impacted most Americans, people were already looking for ways to earn, either a main income or extra income. One of the industries that answered this demand was network marketing or multi-level marketing.

Professionals and home workers who want to earn extra cash in an easy way, found multi-level marketing a suitable earning alternative. Here are five facts why multi-level marketing is considered one of greatest businesses today:

1. Requires only a small amount as startup investment. A traditional business would require you to invest a great amount of money, before even starting operations; however, with MLM this hindrance is eliminated.

2. Free from the hassle of keeping and updating an inventory or stock. Your house will not become a storage area cluttered with products because usually the multi-level marketing business has a main office that usually holds all the stock. You will only place an order, either through the web, over the phone or in person.

3. You get to deal with quality products. Most products in multi-level marketing companies are proven to be effective and are backed up with scientific studies and tests before being presenting to the consumers.

4. A source of residual income is possible because multi-level marketing works with compensation plans and incentives that can earn monthly income for a very long time even if the sales rep stops selling the product. You can even retire at an early age and enjoy the rewards of your network.

5. The most significant fact about multi-level marketing is that your income has NO LIMIT. If you hit the right spots, you can earn even billions with it, depending on your commitment to the business.

You too can succeed with multi-level marketing; all you have to do is equip yourself with the right knowledge and tools needed to start correctly. MLM is one opportunity that can give you millions if you hit it right, and it does not require that much effort on your part. You own your time instead of having to answer to an employer.

To start with, you need to determine what kind of multi-level marketing program you are comfortable with, and that you can handle confidently. You should be able to share it effectively with others as you are to build your own network.

Also, you need to do some research and sign up with an multi-level marketing sponsor/mentor who can teach you the ins and outs of the business, and can show you how to be successful in it. If you happen to find this person who can show you how to successfully grow in the business, then you will automatically begin on the right track.

Your MLM Career

If you’re looking to a new career or a new stream of residual income, you may be considering alternative options for generating a consistent income, and as many others before you have done, you may also be considering joining a MLM (Multi Level Marketing) company.

Why consider MLM?

There are many reasons why someone might choose MLM instead of another business.

First, MLM is a great place to meet business oriented people, a group of people who share common interests and are going in the same direction. This can end up in great friendships, business partners and future joint ventures.

Second, most people are looking for a way to either make some extra money or simply make it a career out of it. Both options are feasible, and I think it’s the number one reason why people join this industry. MLM gives you the opportunity to help other too.

Either with financial help by building a great organization or with the products or services you are promoting. MLM also gives you an easy transition between what you are doing now and where you want to go since you can start small and grow in the future without having to jump 100% in your MLM project. These are just a few reasons why someone would look into a MLM company.

The question is however, how can you choose a solid MLM company?

There are thousands of them out there so before you start investing your money and your precious time, look very closely at your requirements and why which company might fulfill them. A few key points are the following: How long is the company going for? In other words, is this company is here to stay? If you’re planning a residual income, you would want this income to last for a very long time.

How Do You Get Clients And Build Your Downline?

A healthy MLM organization has customers outside the network, meaning there’s a person who will actually buy the product or services for the benefit of it, but won’t join in the network of distributor. How much will you be paid? Understanding the compensation plan is very important. It may take time and a few review of it, but it’s crucial that you know how much you can make and how can you achieve it.

Training & Resources

The most important part of it is training. How can you be successful at something if nobody shows you how? Make sure the company or team you join has good training in place, ready to show you from day one, what to do and where to go to achieve your goals.

In taking in consideration these points, you can search thru the DSA (Direct Selling Association) website to find which company is right for you. Make a list of potential company, visit their websites, review the compensation plan, products or services information and study them. Conduct due diligence prior to signing up so that you are making informed decisions based on the information you have researched.

Think of it as a search for a business partner, not just some random search to make some quick cash. This MLM industry can really help you if you use it wisely and you do your part in ensuring legitimacy, asking questions regarding the program and ensuring that you thoroughly educated and aware of what is involved and what is required of you in order to be successful.

Prospecting Is An Exercise In Storytelling

Many network marketers tend to fall short when it comes to prospecting. They either go overboard and chase away anybody interested or they don’t do enough and nobody shows up. One of the simplest ways to get a lead generation funnel up and running is to learn the right words and phrases to use to be interesting and non-threatening to an interested prospect.

If you are a good storyteller, put it to work with interested parties. If you can get the prospect engaged and interested, you will get a lot further than spouting statistics and sales figures. Remember, a person has to feel comfortable before they can hear anything your saying. Telling a story is an easy way to break the ice.

Story, you ask? Well, first of all keep it short and simple. You can weave a presentation of the MLM product and service into the story, but don’t make it so long and drawn out that the prospective person is comatose by the time you finish. You’ve seen it before - eyes glaze over and they just continue to shake their head up and down. You know their mind is gone.

Prepare them ahead of time for a story that is a certain length. If you tell someone that you have a quick story and it will only take a couple minutes, that’s much easier to take than simply launching into a presentation. If you say, two minutes or a couple minutes, then stick to it. Don’t lie to folks, because half of this is about trust.

People always enjoy hearing a good yard as long as the length of time is controlled. Once the person agrees, go into the following presentation and ask questions.

You must always include one question that states: “How much extra money do you want to earn in a month?” No matter what else you do, you must include this question and wait for the prospect to answer. This is HUGE! If you ask, then wander on, they won’t get a chance to interact and get their dreams out there. They don’t want to hear about your success stories and loads of statistics. Just remember, they’re interested in what’s in it for them.

Be yourself and the prospect will feel the truth in your presentation. People join MLM groups and suddenly grow a second head and three arms when they approach a person. If a two-headed, three-armed MLM associated came running up to me spouting sales figures, I would be gone in a flash. Wouldn’t you?

Just remain true to yourself and the person you’re talking with. In that way, you can concentrate on presenting your story quickly and effectively and move towards conversion.

The Multi-Level Marketing Distribution Model

April 6, 2009 by admin

If you want to create a distribution model that allows a parent company to market its products directly to consumers by means of relationship referrals, and if you have ever thought about becoming a distributor for a multi-level marketing company in order to make a little extra money or build a business working on your own, then following paragraphs will explain you how you can achieve it.

Multi-level marketing is a system of retailing in which consumer products are sold by independent businessmen and women known as distributors usually in customers’ homes. You can set your own hours and earn money based on your efforts and ability to sell consumer products or services supplied to you, the distributor, by an established multi-level marketing company.

Independent, unsalaried salespeople of multi-level marketing, referred to as distributors (or associates, independent business owners, dealers, franchise owners, sales consultants, consultants, independent agents, etc.), represent the parent company and are awarded a commission based upon the volume of product sold through each of their independent businesses (organizations).

The multi-level company also will encourage you to build and manage your own sales force by recruiting, motivating, supplying and training others to sell the products or services. A percentage based on the sales of your sales force would be your compensation, in addition to personal sales.

“Pyramid” schemes, on the other hand, concentrate mainly on the quick profits to be earned by selling the right to recruit others.

The merchandise or service to be sold is largely ignored, and little or no mention is made regarding a market for the products. Pyramid scheme participants attempt to recoup their investments in products by recruiting from the ever- decreasing number of potential investors in a given area.

Consider the results if one person recruited six distributors, each of whom, in turn, recruited six others, and carry the process through nine steps as follows: 1 6 2 36 3 216 4 1,296 5 7,776 6 46,656 7 279,936 8 1,679,616 9 10,077,696

At more than ten million people for every nine steps in the distribution program, the distributors soon would be recruiting one another. In order for everyone to profit in a pyramid scheme, there would have to be a never-ending supply of potential (and willing) participants.

Although it is possible to build a successful multilevel business with comparatively little start-up money, we have to keep in mind that it is not a means of getting rich quickly or easily.

Successful distributors, who have recruited and trained a large number of sellers, also have to assume ongoing wholesaling and managing responsibilities as well as making sales to their own retail customers.

Managing such a large network can be lucrative, but it is hard work and can become a full-time job. Distributors earn a commission based on the sales efforts of their organization, which includes their independent sale efforts as well as the leveraged sales efforts of their downline.

This arrangement is similar to franchise arrangements where royalties are paid from the sales of individual franchise operations to the franchisor as well as to an area or region manager.

Commissions are paid to multi-level marketing distributors according to the company’s compensation plan. There can be multiple levels of people receiving royalties from one person’s sales.

The Truth About MLM

March 23, 2009 by admin

I can say with humility that I am a person who can tell you the truth about MLM, also called Network Marketing, or multi-level marketing. The reason I say that is that I have belonged to many MLM companies, but more importantly, I have actually made some good money in MLM. That is the good news.

The bad news is that not everyone who joins Multi Level Marketing opportunities come out on top. In fact, failure to evaluate your own skill-set prior to joining a MLM opportunity will ultimately lead to absolute failure.

MLM can be “reputable,” but many companies (I am tempted to say “most”) are not. Point two is that it is very hard work. To prove MLM is legit I need only point to Amway. Amway now has ads on TV. It is has been around for decades. Amway owns the Orlando Magic. Their arena is called the Amway Center. Many people have made fortunes with Amway. The bad news is that “most” (and here I am sure of using the term) people who joined Amway did not make any money and quit.

Another example is Mary Kay. What makes a company legit?  That is easy. That have a real product to sell like soap or cosmetics. There are thousands of bogus companies, especially on the Internet, that don’t have anything to sell. They just want to pass around money. These are Ponzi schemes. So why is it hard? Number one is because it is direct selling. Most people do not want to sell. How happy are you to hear from those people who call at dinner time?

Also, to be a success in MLM, you need to find other people who want to sell. You can imagine how easy that is going to be. But to do well you need to build a big team so that you earn commissions on what you sell plus commissions from everyone in your team. The concept is valid and has worked like a charm for some. So, MLM can be legit, but be more than very careful.

A final caution, NEVER consider a company that wants you to pay a lot of many to join. It will cost something to join legitimate companies like Amway or Mary Kay, but not very much. Good luck if you think MLM might be for you.

Get ready to outwork all of the competition.

Stop Recruiting and Start Talent Scouting

February 23, 2009 by admin

It is a known fact that any multi-level marketing thrives on the number of their distributors.  These distributors are the bloodline of any multi-level marketing business. So, what we do is recruit, recruit, and recruit more downlines believing that more you recruit the better.

In adding a downline into your network always remember the saying:

Quality always exceeds the quantity.

If you really want to become very successful in this business, you have to develop the habit of becoming a talent scout, rather than just recruiting machine. They start harassing people in line at events. Friends and relatives are called up even if they’re totally not interested

Most of the beginners in MLM business start out being a recruiter. Everyone they see or run into was a prospect. No matter whom they were or what sort of attitude they had. A recruiter is determined to RECRUIT every single person they see or talk.  This method may be successful in the short term, and then it just dies into its natural death.

Why? Well, that is because recruiters just simply recruit and that’s it.  They talk and persuade people into joining with them, even when these people don’t really want to, and most of the time recruiters become very annoying. In other words, the people say yes when they really mean no just to get you off from their back.  So what eventually happens is that the majority of people usually end up quitting because they didn’t have what it takes to succeed in this kind of business in the first place. Most times the recruiter does not stick around long enough to train them or show them how to do the business. He or she is to busy recruiting their next victim.

Most of the recruiters are just good at being a recruiter. They may not be very good trainers, leaders or just don’t have time to train because they are so busy recruiting.   The recruiter usually doesn’t take the time to actually get to know a person or even ask them what they are interested in. What are a prospective recruits goals are or what sort of talents they even have is important. All they want is the sign up, without realizing that their newly signed-up downline is just another stagnant, unproductive name in the structure.

What you have to do is change this dynamic?  The solution is to stop being a recruiter, and start being a talent scout.  A talent scout doesn’t rush into recruiting; they take time, they talk a little and listen more.

Talent scouts don’t just approach anybody they came across and ask them to be a part of their company.  Being a talent scout means you have to be selective, keep your eyes and ears open for those people who have the talent, drive and hunger to change their lives.  Look for the people that are highly motivated, and are individuals who have a winning attitude.  Look for ordinary people that can do ordinary things extraordinarily well!

If you really want to become very successful in MLM business, you have got develop the quality of becoming a talent scout, rather than just a recruiting machine!

The Key Factors In Building A Successful MLM Business

February 9, 2009 by admin

Succcessful multi-level marketers will tell you that the key factor to success in MLM is simplicity. They  have carried on the K.I.S.S. priniciple of Keep It Simple, Sweetie/Stupid/Sucker - you name it, they tell you to keep it easy and straightforward. Multi-level marketing is a very easy business.

By easy, that means that the concepts are not that hard to absorb. When people think easy, they think that means little work. However, by easy, MLM opportunities still require the sales associate to work the business. Those who fail in MLM are shocked when they find out that the reason for their failure is their lack of tenacity, work ethic and determination to make it work. So, instead, they will blame the company or opportunity.

The way to success with multi-level marketing is in keeping the idea that work is involved. Work can come in many forms including learning, prospecting, selling the product or service, follow-up and self-study. While most multi-level marketing organizations are designed to be easy to follow, the success is dependant upon the recruit’s ability to imitate and learn from those who have gone before them.

Every thing involved in a good multi-level marketing program is easy enough to grasp. However, most concepts must be performed again and again in order to find success and happiness at the other end. If the recruit can learn to duplicate their efforts, the results will be phenomenal as long as they are following the blueprint that the MLM business model has created.

Reinventing the wheel is the second biggest factor in the success or failure of an associates efforts. If the associate takes the blueprint and tries to do things that are out of line with what has been repeatedly proven to be successful, then this may lead to ultimate failure.

In multi-level marketing, the bottom line is that a sales associate should never try to go it alone. First of all, it’s unnecessary. Secondarily, it can lead to failure and frustration. There should be no special skills involved in getting the business up and running. Resources should be available that allow the sales associate to both promote and recruit others with a minimum of work and creation of promotional materials. This separates the good MLM companies from those that don’t support their representatives. Keep in mind that good support is the key to a successful business.

Sticking to the multi-level marketing blueprint is also part of it, but not all. Having the right mindset to seize opportunity when it presents itself and stay in a state where learning comes easily and naturally.

For those of you that thought people only joined multi-level marketing companies and programs for the purpose of increasing their wages, think again. People join Multi-level companies for a variety of reasons.

It is well known that Multi-level marketing businesses can provide money making opportunities for its members. It allows them to make money from their personal sales, as well as earn a commission from the sales of all those recruited .The ability to earn extra cash with a low cost start- up fee, allows many to improve their lifestyles, fulfill financial obligations as well as pursue financial goals.

Others utilize the social aspects of the multi-level marketing company, activities such as cookouts, business meetings, cruises and the like as a means to socialize with and befriend a variety of people from all over the world and all walks of life.

Get-togethers are usually very upbeat offering the attendees a chance to feel worthwhile and special. That feeling of worthiness is usually missing in standard, corporate jobs. Many people haven’t felt exceptional in their job for years and years.

Also, to become a member of a MLM company or to establish your own MLM company, you don’t have to be a genius and no degree, resume, interview or previous experience is required. You are only required to possess strong communication skills, a desire to succeed and lots of grit and determination.

Multi-level marketing open many doors for people desiring to become entrepreneurs. It permits people to become their own boss, and to establish their own terms of agreement. Multi-level marketing programs liberate many from the hassles and pressures often felt as an employee. When a person first joins a program, attends a meeting or talks with their mentor, invariably the lack off freedom when holding down the 9 to 5 job comes up.

As a multi-level marketing business owner you can create your own work schedule. You decide when you work and when you have time off. MLM allows you leisure time so that you can pursue your dreams and indulge in your hobbies.

Many view multi-level marketing as a means to help others. The training seminars equip members with valuable business tips and strategies, which can in turn be taught and passed down to others.

The many motivational seminars held by MLM companies help to motivate members and help them to find and tap into their inner strengths and talents.

MLM For 2009

January 12, 2009 by admin

Wow, a new year, a new President, taxpayer money from Congress to bail out big businesses and banks - how much did you get? Well, if you’re not a CEO, you probably are in the same financial situation you were in this past year. If your pocketbook is still strained, then it’s time to increase your income without trying to find another job or investing time and money you don’t have - Multi Level Marketing!

Wait a minute, selling catalog junk to your neighbors and alienating your friends with sales calls? Wrong. Multi Level Marketing (MLM if you’re a pro) simply gives you the power to market products that you and your friends, colleagues, grandma, already use.

The difference is that You Make Money. (Did you read that correctly?) By providing the word-of-mouth approach, manufacturers aren’t paying a warehouse and distribution network to get their products to market - they’re paying you.

If you are already thinking about how much time this will take, you’re ready to understand the best part of MLM - as you develop other’s interests in the products, they can sign up to market as well, and you earn a percentage of their sales as well. This is called residual income, meaning you get paid through your network’s efforts, not just your own.

Okay, how much does this cost me, you ask? Most MLM plans require you to do one main thing - change your spending habits. Rather than purchasing through your local store (the one owned by the corporation that got your tax money - thanks Congress!), you purchase items through your network. You’re not spending more money, you’re just re-directing it. And, your goal is to get others to do the same.

Most networks have a nominal processing fee to set up your account, and possibly purchase some basic marketing materials. No, you don’t have to draw against your upside-down mortgage.

MLM or multi-level marketing is a common-sense approach to redirecting your spending habits that results in a net gain in your income. You have the freedom and flexibility to invest as much or as little of your time as you please. As you build your network, your income increases through recruiting more distributors.

Most importantly, you aren’t borrowing against your limited assets to fund your efforts. In a depressed economy, MLM gives you the unique opportunities to increase your income without increasing your financial risk.
