The problem is however, that not every marketer is a good speaker.
According to statistics, the fear of speaking in public is the number one fear of them all. In fact, over 41% of people have some fear or anxiety dealing with speaking in front of audiences. People who have this fear can experience all kinds of symptoms: sweaty palms, accelerated heart rate, memory loss and even difficulty in breathing. These people may experience stage fright and are unable to express themselves in the way they need to.
If you have this kind of fear or anxieties, there are things you can do to improve your ability to give speeches or presentations. First, identify that nearly everyone, even experienced speakers, have some form of anxiety when speaking in front of group of people. The best way to overcome this anxiety is to acknowledge this fear, and introduce positive thinking and affirmations about the power of your voice. Tell yourself that you have the power to overcome this fear. According to a recent study, proper preparation and rehearsal can help to reduce this fear by about 75%. Practicing proper breathing techniques can further reduce this fear by another 15%, and maintaining a positive mental state can solve the remaining 10%.
Here are a few practical tips in conquering your anxiety:
1. Power-up Your Imagination - Create an image of yourself walking confidently across the stage as the audience is giving you applause. Imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud, clear and confident. When you see yourself as successful, you will be successful. Believe in the power of positive thinking.
2. Sit Back and Relax - Pacing to and fro will agitate you nervousness, so try to sit back relax. Sit comfortably with your back straight. Practicing a breathing exercise by holding your breath for about 3-5 seconds then exhale slowly will help. These exercises will calm your nerves. To relax your facial muscles, open your mouth and eyes wide, and then close them tightly.
3. Turn Nervousness into Positive Energy - the same nervous energy that causes stage fright can be an asset to you. Harness it, and transform it into vitality and enthusiasm.
4. Know Your Enemy - What you fear is your enemy. So if you are afraid of the stage, the audience and your speech, they become a beast to contend with. To successfully conquer these fears, you need to first identify and face them. Know the place in which you are speaking and become familiar with your surroundings prior to the day of your presentation. Arrive early and walk around speaking area. Stand at the lectern and speak few words into the microphone. Walk around where the audience will be seated. Try to walk from where you will be seated to the place where you will be speaking.
5. Know the Audience, if possible greet some of the audience as they arrive and chat with them. It is easier to speak to a group of friends than to a group of strangers.
6. Know the material - If you are not familiar with your material or are uncomfortable with it, your nervousness will increase. Practice your speech or presentation, and revise it until you can present it with ease
7. Prepare, prepare, and prepare - Remember that proper preparation and rehearsal can help to reduce this fear by about 75%. Nothing will relax you more than to know you are properly prepared. Remember, “He who fails to prepare is preparing for failure - so Prepare, Prepare, Prepare”
