Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Not Go Into MLM Business

Without really asking, without really knowing, without giving it a serious thought, many people jump onto the MLM bandwagon, and expect the whole package delivered during the business opportunity presentation.

After joining, they expect to have money heaped in their laps before the first week of working is over. This is the main recipe for disaster, and indeed, the chief reason why MLM business has been getting such a bad rap.

MLM works, but only for those who have taken the time to thoroughly understand the nature of the game, how to play it, and more importantly, how to win.

Below are the top five reasons why you should not go into MLM business.

5. MLM is the future of business and you don’t want to be left out. No question, the MLM industry has been experiencing unprecedented growth in the past several years. And people do tend to get excited at the prospect of taking a slice out of the pie that could be had by just about anyone. Aside from thoroughly understanding the business, you have to make the crucial choice which is the right MLM Company for you. Certainly, not all of them are equal. Needless to say, not all of them could be the right one for you either. Many a failure have resulted hasty decisions made.

4. I want to earn unlimited income. You’ll hear testimonials during business opportunity meetings from a guy saying how much he earned his first month, until the day he finally quit his day job. He just bought a yacht and has just returned from a vacation in  the Caribbean.

You start thinking, I’m a better looking guy than he is and I’m smarter to boot. Surely, I could do that too. Hubris runs wild and your mind comes up with all of the things you could do better than “that guy with the yacht”. Now, there is nothing wrong with a positive mental attitude. But greed does not a successful multi-level marketer make.

There is a reason why that person was chosen to speak. There is also a reason why not everyone gets to speak. The adage about the early bird catching the worm would ring true in this instance. Latecomers joining the business could take a lot longer time reaching the top. And, what you don’t know, is that guy worked his buns off t get his business to the success level that it is.

3. What’s not to like, work only a few hours a day! You have to build the right foundation for the business to grow. And often, this means long hours of work at the beginning. From the testimonials heard from those who have started ahead, there is the idea created the same experience they now have would be true for everybody. And very few people get to reach the working a few hours each day stage because they did not invest effort at the beginning. The early stage of the business is where most quitters are found.

2. I’m doing this as a favor. Few situations compare to the discomfort of having an old friend egg on you to try out something so amazing he’s just come across and just needs to share with everyone he knows. We’ve all had that experience. An old friend we haven’t seen in years suddenly turns up, even bringing with him another overenthusiastic guy to spread the good news.

Before you know it, you’ve given a commitment and along with some misgivings you console yourself with the thought that you’ve done it as a favor. No success story can be expected from this one.

1. Everybody can do this. Guess what, MLM is just not for everyone. The MLM business is one affair where having a positive outlook is a guarantee for success. For every one that has succeeded, there are many others who have failed simply because they did not thoroughly analyze what they were getting themselves into and they did not exhibit the hard work and perseverance of somebody running a business.

And like any business, the startup is often filled with bumps and disappointments. Getting through it does not even assure you of anything yet.

You have to understand what it’s going to take to reach the top in this business. Just like any worthy endeavor, getting into the MLM requires every bit of sacrifice and determination, focus and imagination. Its business, remember.

The Truth About MLM

I can say with humility that I am a person who can tell you the truth about MLM, also called Network Marketing, or multi-level marketing. The reason I say that is that I have belonged to many MLM companies, but more importantly, I have actually made some good money in MLM. That is the good news.

The bad news is that not everyone who joins Multi Level Marketing opportunities come out on top. In fact, failure to evaluate your own skill-set prior to joining a MLM opportunity will ultimately lead to absolute failure.

MLM can be “reputable,” but many companies (I am tempted to say “most”) are not. Point two is that it is very hard work. To prove MLM is legit I need only point to Amway. Amway now has ads on TV. It is has been around for decades. Amway owns the Orlando Magic. Their arena is called the Amway Center. Many people have made fortunes with Amway. The bad news is that “most” (and here I am sure of using the term) people who joined Amway did not make any money and quit.

Another example is Mary Kay. What makes a company legit?  That is easy. That have a real product to sell like soap or cosmetics. There are thousands of bogus companies, especially on the Internet, that don’t have anything to sell. They just want to pass around money. These are Ponzi schemes. So why is it hard? Number one is because it is direct selling. Most people do not want to sell. How happy are you to hear from those people who call at dinner time?

Also, to be a success in MLM, you need to find other people who want to sell. You can imagine how easy that is going to be. But to do well you need to build a big team so that you earn commissions on what you sell plus commissions from everyone in your team. The concept is valid and has worked like a charm for some. So, MLM can be legit, but be more than very careful.

A final caution, NEVER consider a company that wants you to pay a lot of many to join. It will cost something to join legitimate companies like Amway or Mary Kay, but not very much. Good luck if you think MLM might be for you.

Get ready to outwork all of the competition.

Strategizing is one key that you need to think about if you decide to make the multi-level marketing the opportunity  and life-changing, career move that will allow you to work for yourself and build a successful business.

It’s also good to remember that most multi-level marketing programs involve selling a product or service. This includes prospecting where you will be trying to convince a potential recruit or downline to buy the product, support the team and build a bigger downline. While the meetings may be fun, it is still a job and should be treated with respect.

If you do not have any marketing skill, it will take training to get you up to speed on what it takes to successfully close a sale. Things like lead generation, recruiting, product sales and knowledge are just some of the things you’ll need to learn as you move up in the company. You’ll need to have enough skill to convince a buyer or a potential customer that your product is the best answer to their problem.

You’ll need to be able to present the benefits of the product, service or opportunity in a clear and succinct manner that portrays professionalism and seriousness of purpose. If you’re not prepared to make this kind of commitment to the business and yourself, don’t waste your time. Go take a golf class, music lessons or public speaking course.

This will lead to the next item in building your network. If you cannot convince a person to join or avail of the project, it would likely that you will have a difficult time to build your network.

And don’t underestimate the power of your network once it’s been established. Your network is very important for you to be able to earn your incentives and extra rewards.

Finally, when you build your network, you will need to sustain it. It is not enough that you have already recruited the required number of downlines, it is also important to keep your downlines alive and active. A survey says that 98% of MLM opportunities only work effectively on the first phase or initial phase, usually downlines or the main person himself fall out of the business.

You may hear many success stories about the multi-level marketing business. But how many percent of the total individuals engaging in MLM really become successful?

When you know the answer to this, you will also be able to decide to join or not to join MLM. If you decide that the multi-level marketing opportunity is for you, then you will be prepared to strategize and do what it takes to become a success story of your own.

Caution Ahead

If you are looking to join a program that sound almost too good to be true, you could be right. It could be a true multi-level marketing program or a pyramid scheme.

Sometimes, without reading the fine print, it’s hard to tell the difference between a multi-level marketing (MLM) program that is designed to earn you money and build your business, and a pyramid program that is out to take your money and leave you will next to nothing to show for it.

Discovering after you’ve signed the contract that the program you joined is a pyramid scheme and not the legit multi-level marketing program can cost you a lot of money and heartache. Knowledge can make the difference between business success or failure. And, in actuality, it’s quite easy to ascertain the difference if you know the signs.

Here’s how you can tell the difference between the two. A multi-level marketing program is a system of selling in which you sign up other people to sell with you, and they recruit others to help them. It does sound like a pyramid scheme, doesn’t it? But it’s not. Your money doesn’t solely depend on how many people you recruit, and in turn, how many people they recruit.

There is a product or service that is good, viable and could work as a franchise business or standalone entity. As a result, what you sell and what your recruits sell becomes the central portion or at least equal in the MLM company.

A pyramid scheme will have an expectation of monetary gain (money) from participation. The money you make will depend on the efforts of those recruiting at the bottom of the pyramid, and you will have to pay a huge fee to become a distributor. These are three ways of telling if the MLM is a pyramid scheme or a true multi-level market program.

Sometimes, it is explained so cleverly that you don’t see it until after you signed the contract and started working with your new program. By then it will be too late. Your investment will be gone.

That’s why you will want to take your time and perform due diligence when considering a program. When the MLM representative starts speaking quickly and gets pushy, slow him or her down. It is not necessary for you to sign right then.

When considering a multi-level marketing program always check to see whether the basis of promotion is on recruiting more distributors or the sale of a product at a retail level. A true multi-level marketing program will tell you all the details of the program up front. If you think the program you are researching is a true multi-level marketing program, then go for it.

Get out there and start on your new profession.
